Silenced Korean Movie Eng Sub Srt 21

If you really want to understand the world, read about language. -Ludwig Wittgenstein

Language is nothing but a means of communication between people. It's an essential part of any social interaction. But how could one person's words affect another's worldview? A movie called Silenced probably gives us a better answer to this question than any other medium can offer us. The film depicts the life of Jung Jae-hyun, a deaf elementary school teacher who was wrongfully imprisoned for three years following the Korean War because he could not keep his mouth shut about human rights abuses committed by his fellow soldiers in power. The movie follows Jung as he fights against the government to gain freedom not only for himself but for the rest of the world as an activist. The cinematography, acting, scriptwriting, direction, editing, soundtrack are all top notch. The motion picture is well-paced and easy to follow. However, it still does not come close to telling us everything there is to know about language. It does not tell us how language affects our world or how that world affects our language. But while Silenced may not be the perfect metaphorical paradise of language, it's no less than a paradise. It's an oasis of human rights, of justice. If this film does nothing else, it leaves us with one thing. Language is not our enemy; it is our necessary friend. If you really want to understand the world, read about language. -Ludwig Wittgenstein

One day Jung Jae-hyun went to see the famous philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein in Vienna in 1938 (the year before Wittgenstein died). Jung was amazed at how handsome and intelligent he looked. He wanted to know Wittgenstein's philosophical viewpoint. When Jung told Wittgenstein that he had come to ask him about the fundamental nature of language, Wittgenstein replied, "If you really want to understand the world, read about language." Wittgenstein was surprised at Jung's request, but he considered it. He said, "The most important thing is to be interested in something." And then he added, "I am afraid I cannot give you any advice. If you are really interested in anything; if you are really serious about anything; if you are passionate about that…if there is something that does catch your heart then everything will be revealed to you. I can't say anything more." Jung said, "I understand." At the end of the conversation, Wittgenstein shook his hand and walked away without saying goodbye. This scene is featured in this Korean movie. The Korean title for this movie is Silenced. I prefer to write it as "Silenced", because it is a literal translation of the title. The word "silence" has two meanings, one being "the absence of sound" and another being "the absence of language". The first meaning fits the context well since the movie takes place right after World War II, at a time when countries were still finding out how to cope with the aftermath of war.
